Using hot coals or a brick heated at the fireside was the way of carrying warmth from the hearth into bed, by moving the bed warmers or Warming Pan under the covers. This would warm the bed before getting in. Mainly used by the more wealthy families, but part of an English home for centuries and was usually positioned by the open fire for obvious reasons.

A Persian copper Chafing dish

Persian Copper chafing dish Circa early 20thC comes in five pieces, 2 bowls i.e one for water ( bains-marie) and one for food, lid, burner and stand. All in very nice condition, no dents or damage and complete. Has the Tehran Foundry mark stamp, as shown. The lid has an embossed relief of camels and a figure leading them.

A chafing dish (from the Old French chauffer, "to make warm") is a kind of portable grate raised on a tripod, originally heated with charcoal in a brazier, and used for foods that require gentle cooking, away from the "fierce" heat of direct flames. The chafing dish could be used at a table or provided with a cover for keeping food warm on a buffet. Double dishes that provide a protective water jacket are known as bains-marie and help keep delicate foods, such as fish, warm while preventing overcooking.
