Registry of Designs ( Kite Marks )


Illustrated below are the two forms of "Registry of Design" or Kite Mark used between the years of

1842 to 1883


A product produced between 1842 and 1867 would bear the following marks. (Example for the 12th of November 1852).




Month letters for both periods are as follows

An item produced between
1868 and 1883 would bear the following marks. (Example for the 22nd of October 1875).

On 1st January 1884, the whole system changed, and all registered designs after that date had a sequential number, usually prefixed with the letters 'Rd. No.'

The Roman numeral at the top of the diamond indicated the 'class' or type of material used - for example III was for glass ware and IV was for clay ware.

The word Bundle refers to how may items were included in the package or bundle.
